This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

History of the Ottoman Empire From the Earliest Period to the Present Time William Deans Books

This is an interesting book, published in 1854, during the Crimean War. As a consequence, the presentation is not filtered through perfect hindsight. It tells me as much about the British attitude towards the Ottomans as it does about the Ottomans themselves. The biases are fairly obvious and easy to take into account.

Another advantage is that the author gives details that later histories consider inconsequential and thus ignore. And since there is no need to be politically correct, some of the analyses are fairly brutal and often refreshing.

Much has been learned and written about the Ottomans since 1854, so this book should not be considered in isolation. A modern general history should be read first. However, if you are a history geek like me this is a worthwhile read.

History of the Ottoman Empire From the Earliest Period to the Present Time William Deans Books Reviews

Written to justify British and French intervention in the Crimean war, it provides insights into the rules of the Great Game as seen in real time. As for Russian policy, interesting to see how it hasn't changed in 500 years.
I purchased the History of the Ottoman Empire Edition to read and have more detail of this history of our world. The Ottoman empire was one of the greatest in history and deserves a thorough understand as to why they emerged out of the middle east to control most of their world around them. The author William Deans has written an interesting and thorough history of the leaders accomplishments, of course centering S

This book should not be considered just for history buffs, but for general knowledge of the empire and it far reaching impact on the world and the activities that would go on, into the 1900 and on to our present times. Othman. Having been written and printed in the early 1800’s and presented in such great detail, most of which delivers a complete knowledge base of the empire. The author depicts the complete power of the Othman's for the reader, who should feel confident the subject is as thorough as it can be for this time and place. There is surely much detail concerning the Ottoman empire that has been lost to time, but what is given here is surely as much information as can be collected for one man of his time. The Ottoman's warring and conquest led to a disregard for human life of those not Ottoman and Muslim, though most other regions and the other powers of this time, were mostly just as horrible to those who they would reach and conquer, as were the Othman descendants. The Turks and their Muslims, with their pursuit of territory and conquests, would bring much misery to much of Europe and Africa, but along with it, leave a culture which was the peak of learning and much of the knowledge of the time. What came of the world due to Ottoman conquest impacts us to this day. This book in ebook format is easy to read using most any reader and worked well for this reader.
A comprehensive and sympathetic survey of the Osmani empire. The earliest beginnings are mostly only alluded to, and being written in the late 1800's, there is nothing about WWI, Atta Turk, or modern Turkey. Exactly what I was looking for. Impressively readable, and the price is right.
Apparently written about 1850? Location terminology complicates understanding. Opinionated to such an extent that it is unclear if it is history or argument for war, as last pages appear to be. Still provides good insight to history of geographic, political, and religious interactions seldom studied in the US.
What I have read so far is excellent in view of so many millitary maneuvers with its upticks and reverses. Towards the end is added tidbit about Greek independence, culture and history unbeknownst to me. These cultural nuances add most favorably to the account.
Very detailed description of the time line.
I was able to visualize the scenes due to the author taking the time to give great detail.
Suggest that you keep the narrative in chronological order. I got focused when the author went back in years, when the chapter was describing a future event.
This helped me understand the tactics that are still used in political nation building and war in these current times .
Being written in a different time makes the read a little tedious at times but none the less interesting. Refreshing to not have to wallow through political correctness. He was some what bias to the western view but seems to be equally critical of all sides as he progressed through the ages. The brutality of the battles is overwhelming. The massacre of entire cities and populations by both sides of a conflict show the cruelty of the time.
