The world-famous Appalachian Trail is featured in this fifth book in the Rachel Myers series.

Convinced by a friend to join a women's hiking club for a day on the AT, Rachel has what she considers the bad luck to be the one who finds the mutilated body of a young girl that has been dumped just off the trail.

Clues are practically nonexistent even after the corpse has been identified as a local high school girl who was supposed to be on spring break in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The victim's mother persuades the reluctant detective to try and find out what happened. Although she feels lost without her best friend and lover, Detective Robert Barnett, Myers ploughs ahead while she gets to know a newcomer to the area, a video ad technician.

Myers becomes totally immersed in the crime and, although the motive eludes her, she soon turns up several suspects. Was it the moonshiner, the poacher, or the boyfriend. Or was it someone much closer to Rachel Myers.

Appalachian Trail Mix Rachel Myers Murder Mysteries Book 5 edition by Annis Ward Jackson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Appalachian Trail Mix is number 5 in the Rachel Myers Murder Mystery series by Annis Ward Jackson. I loved this one, but I am going to have to go back and read them in order because some things had happened in book 4 that left me a bit puzzled at the beginning of this one, but I figured them out. I suggest reading them in order. I've read one other and loved that one, too.

Rachel is settled in with her new job as administrator of the Sheppard Springs Retirement Center in her home territory in North Carolina, and her former boyfriend, Robby, and his son have moved on to St. Louis, Missouri where Robby is now Chief Detective for their police department. Rachel and the other members of her chamber ensemble are looking for a violinist to take the place of their former violinist who passed away. They have just a couple of weeks to find a replacement.

Amidst all of this, a man named Julian Spencer comes to town and is interested in doing some advertising for the retirement center where Rachel is employed. He gives his presentation which is very nice. Julian Spencer is quite handsome and takes Rachel to lunch. It's a bit hard to pin him down on when he can commit to doing some ad work for the retirement center, though.

Rachel's female friends decide that in order to get her mind off Robby, it would be good for her to go on a hike on the Appalachian Trail with them in a few weeks. It would be a 9-mile hike that would go through a corner of the county. Knowing that it would be futile to say no, Rachel agrees, packs up and on the chosen day takes off with her friends for the hike.
Rachel is an excellent gardener and since it is early April, signs of spring are showing, but for Rachel, it isn't a lovely patch of early wildflowers she finds, but instead it is a dead body lying in the forest. They seem to appear wherever Rachel goes. She finds the body of a young woman wrapped in a red plaid blanket, and it looks like she's been dumped in the woods where no one would be likely to find her.

Rachel and her friends call 9-1-1 and have the authorities come out to look at and remove the body. Rachel and her friends are questioned, and throughout the rest of the book, people who could be suspects pop up everywhere and with motives. Through all the background checks, questioning and denials, the ending will bring to light something you won't expect and someone with a trail of crimes as long as the Appalachian Trail.

Rachel Myers is just an all-around nice person who doesn't take much foolishness, but who is kind and gives the benefit of the doubt. She is an accomplished cello player with the chamber ensemble who can still use some help once in a while, an excellent gardener and also an accomplished horsewoman. She loves her home in North Carolina and her father's best friend, Isaac, who lives nearby. Rachel Myers, the creation of Annis Ward Jackson, is someone
I'd like to have as friend and neighbor. This is the second book I've read, and I want to read the entire series. 5 stars from me!

Appalachian Trail Mix Rachel Myers Murder Mysteries Book 5 edition by Annis Ward Jackson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I have never been disappointed with one of these books. True, they are not intricate, deep, profound, or even complicated. But, they are light, engaging, suspenseful, and entertaining. Just what I need to take my mind off the routine of the day-to-day stuff.
Again Rachel accidentally gets involved in crime solving. This time twists and turns seem to double back on themselves just like hiking or horseback riding trails in the Appalachian Mountains. Enough mystery to pique your interest and enough human interest to keep you wanting more. Read on to see how Rachel unties the knots of intrigue in this story of mystery and curiosity.
This is the fifth book in the Rachel Myers Murder Mystery series. Rachel meets a man at work and they start dating. Something doesn't feel "right" about him. She cannot quite put her finger on it but there is something that she doesn't like about Julian Spencer. Although Julian made a presentation to the board, he does not seem very interested in doing an advertising video for the retirement center.
Rachel's friend, Donna gets her to go hiking with her hiking group. They split up in partners to walk. Rachel's partner keeps having to make "pit stops" in the woods to go to the bathroom. Because there are so many people on thr trail, Rachel makes sure they find a secluded spot. Unfortunately for Rachel, she finds a body wrapped in a plaid blanket. Will she investigate? if you like cozy mysteries, stories about horses, mountains, plants, and even chamber music, this series is for you. I have enjoyed every book in this series so far. I am so glad the librarian told me about this author!
Once again, Rachel Myers becomes involved in a murder investigation. Although she never looks for victims and tries to lead a quiet life, the victims or their families always find Rachel. In this case, she was actually the person who found the victim's body. I don't want to say more about the plot because I don't want to give anything away, other than the premise of this book could have been ripped from today's headlines. What I can say is that, in the past, something has reached out and grabbed Rachel which leads her to the killer. This time, that did not happen and Rachel struggled to discover what really happened until, all of a sudden, things came together and made sense to her, leading her to the killer. I find Rachel to be a very likeable character and am always interested in learning more about her and her life. Apart from Rachel, her friends, and the crimes, the author beautifully describes the settings of her mysteries, such as the mountains, the trails, the rivers, the sunrises, the trees and their leaves, and a wide variety of flowers. I have never visited this part of our country, yet through these books, the author has given me a real feeling and vivid views which make me feel like I have been there. I just love these mysteries and will be deeply saddened if Ms. Jackson ever decides to end this series. I've already started reading the next one.
